The Intake Air 4.0 has upgraded CE-approved armor in the shoulders and forearms, as well as an articulated, removable triple-density back protector, and comes with a zipper to connect to Tour Master pants designed to work with it. There are two side “hand-warmer” pockets, as well as an inner, zippered pocket the maker calls a map pocket, though it was a tad too short to easily accept one of my AAA folded maps (8.5 x 3.75 in.) without folding. Also included is a mobile phone pocket that fit my now-ancient iPhone 4S and Otterbox Defender case, as well as a larger inside pocket that would take a big wallet or other gear. To make the jacket work for more than just summer use, Tour Master equips the jacket with a zip-out water-resistant “Aqua-therm” liner, so it could easily be used for spring, summer, and fall.
This Intake Air 4.0 was sent to us in high-visibility green, which I like, based on the theory of conspicuity that says, “If they see you, they might not drive into you.” Aiding conspicuity at night are extensive reflective trim sections called “360° Phoslite” on the jacket. Tour Master also equips the jacket with a fabric tailpiece that extends below the waist and would be very nice on a bike with lower bars and maybe slightly rear-set pegs. However, on my touring rig, the tailpiece got between my butt and the rear of the saddle, because the saddle is sculpted with a big butt-stop that makes a step up from the rider to the co-rider. My fix was to flip the tailpiece over the rear edge of the butt-stop, which it did easily, not being too stiff or thick.
